Workshop details:

Each participant should bring 4-6 small to medium size pots. Burnished and bisqued to cone 08-06  (Bring extra pots if you wish, they may be fired time permitting and there will be some extra bisqued pots there to purchase if you like.)

ITEMS FOR YOU TO BRING pt1:

- horsehair, feathers (if you have them - otherwise supplied)

- cans to fit your pots (minimum 1-1.5" clearance in height and width – we also have lots to use)

- rubber gloves

- good quality scrubbies (green pot scrubbers)

- dry newspaper(Not shiny magazine type), green painters tape/masking tape

- a personal handtowel for when glazing

- old bath towels for covering reducing pots. 

- notebook and pen

- brushes, variety of sizes and styles

- leather apron (we only have two)

- heavy leather gloves with gauntlets or cuffs (we only have a few pairs)

- welders helmet (we only have two)

- hair protection made of natural materials such as cotton bandana or wool toque

There are two main glazing/decorating techniques we will be focusing on.

Post Firing Reduction:

Pots are removed from kiln at temperature and placed in metal can with combustibles to create a reduction environment.

- Transparent crackle glaze with carbon trapping in the cracks.

- Metallic luster glazes that show a variety of surfaces.

- Wax Resist with glaze

Carbon Trap Painting:

Pots are removed from kiln at temperature and placed on soft brick, decoration is done with combustable item and/or sprayed with Ferric chloride.

-Carbon trap painting with feathers, horsehair, sugar

-Ferric Chloride sprayed on unglazed work

-Wax or Texture Resist with glaze and/or Ferric

-Glaze, underglaze, slip trailing over and under

WHAT TO WEAR:

Dress in layers as weather can be unpredictable.

- natural fibres only such as cotton or wool which is less flammable and also won't stick to your skin if sparked

- long sleeves and pants.

- No sandals or open toed shoes or shorts near the kiln and pulling area

- rain gear if needed

ITEMS FOR YOU TO BRING pt2:

*FOOD, FOOD, FOOD, and DRINK everyone gets really hungry and thirsty!  Bring your own reusable water bottle.

Food suggestions:  healthy main dishes for lunch or dinner, sandwiches, salads, chip/dip, cheese/crackers, fruit, cookies, cake and other desserts, dark chocolates!!, nuts, you know etc.  Keep good health in mind and try for whole grains, natural stuff, local, organic, etc. We will coordinate food closer to date.

* Lawn Chair

* Bug repellant, sunscreen, sun hat

* You camera or phone to document the magic that is Raku

RAKU IS FUN BUT CAN ALSO BE DANGEROUS SINCE FIRE, SMOKE AND FUMES CAN BE INVOLVED.
