Wild Clay Talk - with Janet Doble
As part of our mentorship program, a few of our participants had shown interest in learning more about wild clay. We were fortunate that one of our resource mentors, Janet Doble, has been working with wild clay for almost a decade and joined us for a zoom talk about her experience and the work she makes using our local clay.
Here’s a bit more about Janet’s background.
For over 30 years, Janet Doble has created functional and decorative pieces to enhance people’s homes and lives, using earthenware clay and a maiolica glaze with on glaze painting, of floral motifs. Since moving to Parrsboro in 2017, she has been using local clay which she digs from the shores of the Bay of Fundy.
Janet has a BFA in ceramics from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. Her work has won awards including Best Body of Work at Show of Hands, Nova Scotia Designer Craft Council summer festival 1998, and the Popular Choice Award presented by the Ottawa Guild of Potters, Fireworks 2003.
Janet is actively involved with the arts community. For eight years she was president of the Nova Scotia Potters Guild. She was Chair of Visual Arts News and until recently was on staff as Ad Sales Manager. She has also helped to compile the Halifax Art Map and the Guide to Craft and Arts in NS, and the Studio Rally annual publications promoting artists and craftspeople in the province.
She has done several artists residencies, Banff Centre for the Arts in 1990, A.I.R Vallauris in 2013 and Art Lab artist residency in 2016.
