Mary Jane Lundy is a Master Artisan affiliated with Craft Nova Scotia. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, majoring in Ceramics, from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2003. As a clay sculptor, she uses her craft to tell her story and pay homage to her roots. Mary Jane, originally from St. George, New Brunswick, has been residing in East Dover, Nova Scotia, since 1985. Her childhood summers were spent exploring sea life along the shores of the Bay of Fundy.
Mary Jane specializes in creating ceramic sculptures inspired by the land and sea, with the aim of honoring her environment and providing a joyous visual experience for her audience. Her ceramic studio practice revolves around hand-built slab clay construction using red earthenware clay indigenous to Nova Scotia. Mary Jane's work is characterized by intricate surface decoration achieved through various techniques, including pressing found objects into clay slabs. She employs a vibrant palette of under-glazes and transparent over-glazes to create depth and glaze pooling in her imprinted sculptures. The intention behind her art is to engage viewers, enticing them to interact by visually and tactilely exploring the textures of her sculptures.
Mary Jane's work has been featured in numerous fine art galleries and shops across Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Collectors from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Texas, South Carolina, Florida, and New York have commissioned her pieces. In 2008, she was awarded a Nova Scotia Tourism Culture & Heritage Creation Grant to study and create water fountains. Additionally, in 2012, the Nova Scotia Art Bank Purchase Program acquired one of her wall hanging pieces, titled "Octopus Invasion."
Since 2010, Mary Jane has owned and operated her studio, Crescent Clay, in East Dover, Nova Scotia. The studio is open to the public by chance or by appointment. Nestled overlooking Dutch Man’s Cove, connected to the Atlantic Ocean, it serves as a serene space where Mary Jane not only creates but also shares her knowledge as a Yoga and Pottery Instructor, offering Meditation and Theme-based Clay Workshops.
