Kate Grey, KG Ceramics Studio

Punamu’kwati’jk

Kate Grey (she/her) is a ceramic artist, potter and instructor living in Punamu’kwati’jk (Dartmouth) and working in Kjipuktuk (Halifax). Grey was raised in Alberta until she moved to Kjiputuk in her early 20’s to pursue her degree. Grey graduated with a bachelor's degree in ceramics from NSCAD University (2016) and in 2019, Grey and her partner, Kaashif Ghanie (he/him) began their pottery production company, KG Ceramics, where they make handmade functional pottery and teach classes out of their studio in the Wonderneath Arts Society on Maynard Street. Grey has a range of interests that appear in her work such as palaeontology, environmentalism, industry, science, symbolism, landscapes, human history, art history, geology and feminism. “My sculptures, pottery and videos are more often than not bold in colour and design but quiet in their underlying narratives. I prefer to hide symbolism and messaging into the pieces so that the viewer can find something new everytime they look. There is usually humour in my imagery which at times masks deeper subject matter within each piece.”
