Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia

Wide shouldered Vase

Wheel thrown and altered, stamped, Shino glaze

$180

Judy Gordon began making pots in 1998 and has been working full time in clay since 2002. She became involved in the Nova Scotia Potters Guild serving as Membership Coordinator from 2004 – 2012 and as Co-President from 2012 - 2022.

Studying under Carol Smeraldo's Mentorship Programme at APS for several years, she began her major focus in Raku pottery. She has travelled nationally to attend raku & surface firing workshops with Randy Brodnax (among others) and has also been instrumental in organizing many of the Potters’ Guild workshops and Exhibitions in Nova Scotia.

Judy taught pottery at the Findlay Centre and at Atlantic Pottery Supplies from 2006 until 2013 and at Dragonfire Pottery since its inception in 2013 to 2014.

Judy has exhibited her work in numerous shows, both juried and non-juried, in Nova Scotia. At her home studio, Judy works in mid fire stoneware and in Raku.

She believes stoneware is meant to be useful; that people should be able to have lovely, useful, dishware that will stand up to day-to-day use. Her non-functional work is in North American Raku, featuring Horsehair and Feather decoration, Burnishing and Reduction.

Her work is available at her home studio by appointment and she is a member of Halifax’s premiere art co-operative, Art 1274 Hollis Gallery.

A note about Judy from the Guild,

If Sharon Fiske is the guardian angel of pottery in Nova Scotia, then Judy is the heart. Her commitment to the Guild for the last 20 years is a testament to her belief in our community and her love of this wonderful medium. Her quiet presence, gentle guidance, and thoughtful approach has been a steadying presence within our guild. As curator for Triumphs in Clay, her keen eye and unwavering commitment to finding the perfect spot for each piece helped us to create the wonderful layout we did with the amazing works of our artists. Thank you Judy! We love you!
