Meaghers Grant, Nova Scotia

A multi-faceted artist and artisan, Jo-Ann has tried many media in the course of her artistic career. She has been drawing in pencil since she was a child and has returned to the medium since moving back to Nova Scotia in 2007, focussing on animal portraiture. She has done many commissions for people of their beloved pets, both past and present and also likes to draw and paint wildlife. Living in Meaghers Grant, she often gets to study her subject firsthand. She showcases examples of her work at the Festival of Trees and Lights in Middle Musquodoboit every December.

Jo-Ann has also adapted her perennial love of clay to the sculptural form and also has produced wall sculptures of horses, donkeys and other equine subjects. She also likes to throw pots on the wheel and uses wheel-thrown pots as a canvas for the animal theme.

Her education in Interior Design at the University of Manitoba rounded out her strong sense of design and composition and is apparent in her art. She has had many occupations, including a stint at the prestigious Spruce Meadows Stable in Calgary, Alberta, which allowed her to work closely with her subjects, providing the depth of observation and attention to detail that characterises her work.
