Andrea Puszkar, Union Street Pottery
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Andrea Puszkar is a ceramic artist, who works out of her studio in north end Halifax. She blends her experience as a social worker with her art practice, reflecting on the impact of systemic and environmental issues on the internal body and self. Her work explores personal history and nostalgia through the processes of carving and slip casting, using techniques that are deliberately slow to emphasize time, movement and growth. Andrea also has a line of small-batch, wheel thrown, pottery. Using warm brown stoneware and earthy glazes, her functional work resides firmly in the present, creating a balance that speaks to our connection to earth, sky and water.
Andrea has worked extensively within the arts community, sitting on boards with Visual Arts Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Potters Guild and 4Cs Foundation. She has led numerous community art projects with Halifax Centre for Education, Halifax Regional Municipality, Pier 21, Craft NS, Placemaking Halifax, Nocturne Art at Night and presently offers a free, weekly pottery program for LGBTQIA+ newcomers, partnering with Rainbow Refugee Association of Nova Scotia. Her community work addresses social justice issues through collaborative practice and invites participants to question our personal responsibilities within our collective culture.
Born and raised on the prairies, Andrea is a NSCAD and Dalhousie School of Social Work graduate. She has been making ceramic work and remembering beautiful things since 2000.
