Kirsten Nichols

Winner: Best in Show, Cobalt Award for ‘Crows at the Lake’

Kirsten Nichols, Marks She Makes

Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

A belief in living with the land as part of it, rather than upon it grounds Kirsten Nichols to life, well-being, history and folklore.

Her layered ceramic tile works tell incomplete and fleeting stories. Recent works frame a positive sense of being, imagining the joyful calls of crows greeting the world as the rising morning mist revealing connections in the landscape.

Currently her practice is rooted in exploring different clays focusing on local Lantz Clay, variety of firing methods and investigating  ways in the studio to do more with less in order to create a sustainable practice.  While doing this she studies at NSCAD in the Ceramics Program and sometimes can be found teaching Tile courses through NSCAD Extended Studies.

Her work and commissions can be found in collections across North America.

“Crows at the Lake” – Memory is as solid as a rock, as vanishing as the ripples upon the water or as piercing as the caw of a crow – depends on the moment it captures you in.
