Ashley Hills
I first was exposed to ceramics when I was only about 4 years old, when we toured a local pottery studio. They let me try making something on the wheel (turned into a vase in the loosest sense of the word) and I LOVED IT. I became a full-time artist in 2014 and did sculpting in polymer clay for years but didn't have the opportunity to pick ceramic clay up again until late 2019, and then used a wheel again for the first time since that first magical moment, in April of 2020! I always thought ceramics were too daunting, so much investment etc. etc. but when I dipped my toes in, talk about a rip current dragging me under!
I adore combining sculpture with wheel-thrown and hand-altered elements, and my first love of painting comes through often in illustrative use of glazes. One of the things I love most about ceramics is the massive possibilities! I can tell I'll never stop growing and experimenting, and that in itself is so thrilling as an artist. The other thing that gives me a huge thrill is hearing/seeing people use and love my work in their everyday life. Wow. Being a special part of someone's day, the power of art!
My work is heavily inspired by the beauty of nature, I work in a mix of porcelain, stonewares, and most recently, local wild Nova Scotian clay I foraged myself! I offer limited slots of commissions. If you'd like more information, please feel free to contact me with a description of your muse, I'd love to chat!
